78 Derngate
78 Derngate is a great place to visit for fans of architecture and design. The house was re-modelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916 for W. J. Bassett-Lowke, a Northampton model engineer. At the time of its re-modelling, the house was 100 years old and was purchased by Bassett-Lowke’s father as a wedding present. It is the only house in England that was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The house was restored in 2002-3 to open the house to the public. For more information about this fantastic day, please visit their website. If you would like more information about the house while you are visiting, see the shop where there is more information and books available to buy.
